Janabaha dyo is bathed and repainted once every year a few months before the chariot festival. After the bathing and coating, the ivory-coloured statue is placed on the left side of the temple and the features of the deity are painted on the sculpture by the priests of Janabaha, completing it within a week. According to Painter Narendra Chitrakar, mostly six different colours are used to paint the sculpture. He added that earlier, only natural colours were applied. However, since skilled people to extract the colour from natural sources are rarely available these days, high-quality factory produced paints are used in recent times. Priest Bajracharya said that the painting had to be completed by the coming full moon day, and on the same day, the deity would be placed inside the temple. After that, 10 Karmas (rituals from birth to death performed in the Newa community) would be performed.
