The Sacred Bathing Ritual of Janabaha Dyo/ Dhalii lwigu
Introduction
Like many practices within Vajrayana Buddhism, the bathing ritual of Jana baha dyo carries deep philosophical meaning. Today, while the ritual continues with precision and devotion, its deeper significance is known only to a limited few—often overshadowed by the act of performance itself.
Timing and Importance
The bathing ritual is considered the second most significant annual event of the deity, following the famous chariot procession.
It is performed on Poush Shukla Ashtami—the eighth day of the waxing moon in the Nepali month of Poush. This timing aligns with sacred lunar cycles, reinforcing the ritual’s spiritual importance.
Preparations for the Ritual
Preparations begin a day in advance. The caretaker priests, known as Dyo Pala, collect water in ritual vessels from the Bhachakhushi following tantric rituals.
Despite the river’s present polluted condition, its sanctity remains unquestioned in the ritual context—highlighting the enduring power of tradition over material reality.
The Bathing Ceremony
On the day of the ritual, the idol of Seto Machhindranath is carefully removed from its sanctum and placed on a decorated platform within the courtyard of Janabahal.
The ceremony unfolds in several stages:
Ritual Preparation
- Priests perform elaborate tantric rites
- The idol is ceremonially disrobed, layer by layer
The Sacred Bath
- The deity is bathed using:
- Holy river water
- Cow milk
- Ghee
- Honey
- The bathing is performed multiple times, symbolizing purification and renewal
Distribution of Blessings
The liquid that collects during the ritual is distributed among devotees as jal, believed to possess healing and protective properties.
Atmosphere and Participation
The ceremony attracts hundreds to thousands of devotees, filling the courtyard with chants, music, and devotion. Traditional instruments accompany hymns sung in praise of the deity.
One of the most significant aspects of the ritual is the presence of the Kumari, the living goddess. Her attendance elevates the ritual’s importance, making it one of the rare occasions when she appears outside her residence.
Symbolism and Deeper Meaning
The ritual is widely understood to symbolize:
- Purification and renewal of the divine image
- Cycle of life and transformation
- Compassion and healing
In fact, the annual bathing and repainting of the deity is often interpreted as a reflection of life’s continuous change and regeneration.
